Installing a ceiling fan is one of the most effective ways to enhance your home’s comfort and airflow year-round. But while it may seem like a tempting DIY project, the installation of a ceiling fan—especially one as powerful and design-forward as those that we offer — they must be done by a qualified electrician. This ensures both safety and optimal performance.

If you’ve recently purchased a ceiling fan from us at Selective Fans, here’s what you need to know about how it should be professionally installed, using the Levante ceiling fan as our reference model.

Why Professional Installation Matters

At Selective Fans, we take safety and performance seriously. While many home projects can be DIY’d, ceiling fan installation involves electrical wiring, mounting support, and clearance calculations—all of which require the knowledge and experience of a qualified electrician. Improper installation could result in motor failure, poor performance, or serious injury.

Don’t have an electrician’s details handy? Here is a list for you.

What to Expect from the Installation Process

A professional electrician will follow key steps to ensure your ceiling fan is safely and correctly installed. Here’s a high-level look at the process based on the Levante fan installation manual.

1. Unboxing and Pre-Check

The electrician will begin by unpacking your fan and checking all components against the parts list: motor housing, blades, remote control, downrod, canopy, mounting bracket, and light kit (if applicable). They’ll also assess the installation site to ensure there’s:

  • At least 2.3 meters from floor to blade tips
  • At least 0.5 meters clearance from any surrounding walls or furniture

2. Secure the Mounting Bracket

The mounting bracket must be fixed directly to a metal outlet box attached to a ceiling joist or beam. This box must be rated for ceiling fan use (minimum 22 kg support). Plastic or improperly secured boxes are not safe and should be replaced.

3. Wiring the Fan

After safely shutting off power at the circuit breaker, the electrician will connect the electrical wiring:

  • Black (live wire) to the fan’s black wire

  • White (neutral wire) to the fan’s white wire

  • Ground wire (green or bare) to the fan’s grounding wire

If your fan includes a light kit, they will also connect the blue and white light wires accordingly. All wire nuts will be secured with electrical tape to avoid any disconnection over time. Yes we do special orders if you require a light fitted 😉

4. Assembling and Mounting the Fan

Once the wiring is complete, the downrod is connected to the motor and the fan is lifted into place, seating the hanger ball securely into the mounting bracket. The electrician will then:

  • Tighten the canopy to conceal wiring

  • Install each fan blade with precision and balance

Attach the light kit and shade (if applicable)

5. Remote Control Setup

Your electrician will insert the remote receiver inside the canopy and test the remote pairing:

  • Fan speed (6 levels)
  • Light on/off
  • Timer settings (1H, 4H, 8H)
  • Reverse function

They will also ensure your fan operates smoothly and is balanced properly to prevent wobbling.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Once installed, your Selective Fan requires very little maintenance:

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth only (no solvents)
  • Check blade screws periodically for tightness

Use the included balancing kit if you ever notice wobbling.
